A SECULAR HYMN
age-old tree bark
falls softly to the ground,
then tiptoes unheard
back into earth.
and those
that leave before us
silently follow it
fading freely
back to earth.
And what jubilant praises
are heard
behind them——
in the chirping
and singing
of the birds.
